Shopify for Food & Beverage Brands: The Complete Setup Guide for 2026

F&B is one of the most complex Shopify verticals — perishables, compliance, and repeat purchase dependency make the setup radically different from fashion or electronics. Here's the complete playbook.

Shopify for Food & Beverage Brands: The Complete Setup Guide for 2026

Selling food and beverages online is fundamentally different from selling fashion, electronics, or beauty. Perishables expire. Compliance varies by country and state. Subscription models aren't optional — they're survival. And your product page needs to communicate trust in ways that other verticals don't.

Most Shopify guides treat ecommerce as a monolith. This one doesn't. If you're a founder of a packaged food, beverage, spice, health drink, or supplement brand evaluating Shopify — or you've just launched and feel overwhelmed — this is your complete setup playbook.

Theme Selection: Visual-First, Trust-Heavy

F&B themes need to accomplish three things immediately:

  1. Make the product look delicious — high-quality imagery with lifestyle context (not just pack shots on white backgrounds)
  2. Display compliance and certifications prominently — FSSAI license in India, Halal certification in the Middle East, FDA registration for US exports
  3. Surface ingredient transparency — nutrition facts, allergen warnings, sourcing origins

Recommended themes:

Taste (Shopify Theme Store): Built specifically for F&B brands. Includes ingredient panels, recipe integration, and a visual product story layout. $350 one-time.

Prestige: Not F&B-specific, but its editorial layout works beautifully for premium food brands — artisanal cheese, single-origin coffee, craft spirits. $350 one-time.

Dawn (free): Shopify's default theme is surprisingly capable for F&B if you customize it with Metafield-driven sections for nutrition info and certifications. Zero cost, but requires 10–20 hours of customization.

Regardless of theme, your product page template needs these sections (more on this below).

Product Page Structure for F&B

The product page is where F&B stores win or lose. A fashion product page needs a few images and a size chart. A food product page needs to answer: "Is this safe? Is this fresh? What's in it? Will I like it? Can I get it regularly?"

Essential sections:

Hero section:

  • Product name, price, variant selector (flavors, sizes)
  • Subscription toggle: "One-time purchase" vs. "Subscribe & save 15%"
  • High-quality product image + lifestyle image (the product in use — someone pouring the drink, spreading the jam, cooking with the spice)

Trust bar (immediately below hero):

  • FSSAI license number (mandatory for Indian brands — must be displayed on every product page and the footer)
  • Certifications: organic, vegan, gluten-free, Halal, kosher — whatever applies
  • Shelf life / best before information
  • "Made in India" or origin indicator

Nutritional information panel:

  • Use Metafields to store per-100g values and render them in a formatted table
  • Include: energy (kcal), protein, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, sodium, fiber
  • For supplements: full ingredient list with quantities per serving

Ingredient list:

  • Full INCI/ingredient list with allergen highlights (bold the Big 8 allergens: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans)
  • Sourcing notes if relevant ("Kashmiri saffron," "Assam tea leaves")

Reviews and UGC:

  • F&B reviews carry more weight than in most verticals because people are putting this in their bodies
  • Photo reviews are especially powerful — real customers showing the product in their kitchen
  • Use Yotpo or Judge.me for automated review collection with photo prompts

Bundle / combo section:

  • "Frequently bought together" for F&B is extremely effective
  • Protein powder + shaker, tea sampler pack, spice starter kit
  • Use Rebuy Smart Cart or Shopify's native bundles feature

Setting Up Subscriptions

For F&B, subscriptions aren't a "nice to have." They're the entire business model for consumable products. A customer who buys your granola once is worth ₹500. A subscriber who gets it monthly for 12 months is worth ₹6,000.

As Shopify Partners, we've seen D2C brands achieve subscription attach rates of 25%+ with proper product page and cart design.

Your two options:

Shopify Subscriptions (native, free):

  • Built into Shopify's checkout. No third-party app needed.
  • Supports basic subscription models: subscribe & save with percentage discount
  • Limitations: No prepaid subscriptions, limited analytics, no build-a-box functionality
  • Best for: Simple "subscribe and save" on individual products

Recharge ($99/month):

  • The industry standard for subscription management on Shopify
  • Supports: prepaid subscriptions, build-a-box, subscription gifting, skip/pause/swap, dunning management
  • Customer portal for managing subscriptions
  • Advanced analytics: churn rate, subscription LTV, prepaid vs. pay-as-you-go performance
  • Best for: Brands serious about subscription as a growth lever

The subscription UX that converts:

  1. Default to subscription on the product page (with the one-time option visible but not default)
  2. Show the per-unit savings prominently: "₹420/month" crossed out, "₹357/month with subscription"
  3. Offer frequency options that match actual consumption: weekly for fresh items, bi-weekly for snacks, monthly for supplements
  4. Include a "skip anytime" note near the subscribe button — this reduces friction more than any discount can

Bundle Builders for Combo Packs

F&B brands live on combo packs. A tea brand offering 5 flavors should let customers build their own box of 6 or 12.

Shopify Bundles (native, free):

  • Fixed bundles only: you define which products go together
  • Good for: curated gift sets, starter kits
  • Limitation: customers can't mix and match

Rebuy Smart Cart ($99+/month):

  • Dynamic bundle builder: customers choose products, quantities, and combinations
  • In-cart upsells: "Add a [complementary product] for 20% off"
  • AI-powered recommendations based on purchase history

Wide Bundle ($15/month):

  • Dedicated bundle builder app. Customers pick and choose from eligible products to build a custom box.
  • Good for: mix-and-match snack boxes, tea samplers, spice collections

Weight-Based and Volume-Based Pricing

F&B products often sell by weight (250g, 500g, 1kg) or volume (250ml, 500ml, 1L). Shopify handles this via variants, but the UX needs attention:

Use variant naming that includes per-unit pricing:

  • Instead of: "250g — ₹299"
  • Use: "250g (₹1,196/kg) — ₹299" or "250g — Best for trying"

Configure weight-based shipping:

  • In Settings > Shipping and delivery, create weight-based shipping profiles
  • Different rates for:
    • Under 500g (standard courier)
    • 500g–2kg (standard courier, higher rate)
    • Over 2kg (may need different carrier or packaging)
  • For perishables: add express/cold-chain shipping options as a separate profile

FSSAI Compliance for Indian Brands

If you're selling food products in India, FSSAI compliance isn't optional. Here's what your Shopify store must display:

Mandatory on every product page and the website footer:

  • FSSAI license number (14-digit)
  • FSSAI logo
  • Best before / use by date (updated per batch — use a Metafield)
  • Net quantity
  • List of ingredients in descending order of composition
  • Nutritional information per 100g or per serving
  • Name and address of manufacturer/importer
  • Country of origin (for imported products)

Implementing with Metafields:

Create custom Metafields for each product:

  • custom.fssai_license (single line text)
  • custom.best_before (date)
  • custom.net_weight (single line text)
  • custom.nutritional_info (JSON for structured data)
  • custom.allergens (list of single line text)

Then reference these Metafields in your theme's product template. This approach lets you update compliance information per product without editing HTML.

Halal and Middle East Compliance

For brands targeting Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and the broader GCC:

  • Display Halal certification prominently (preferably in the product image gallery and trust bar)
  • Include Arabic language option (Shopify Translate & Adapt app, free)
  • Payment: integrate Tabby (BNPL popular in the Middle East) alongside standard payment gateways
  • Shipping: partner with Aramex or Fetchr for GCC-specific logistics
  • Product descriptions should reference both metric and local measurement conventions

Essential Apps for F&B Shopify Stores

Reviews: Judge.me ($15/month) or Yotpo (free tier available). Photo reviews are critical for F&B trust.

Subscriptions: Shopify Subscriptions (free) for basics, Recharge ($99/month) for advanced.

Cross-sell: Rebuy Smart Cart ($99+/month). For F&B, the "frequently bought together" recommendation drives significant AOV uplift.

Loyalty: Smile.io (free tier) or Yotpo Loyalty. Points-per-purchase programs work exceptionally well for consumable products because the repurchase cycle is short.

Inventory alerts: Low Stock Alert by Jeeves. F&B brands with seasonal products or limited batches need proactive inventory management.

B2B wholesale: Shopify's native B2B channel. If you sell to HoReCa (hotels, restaurants, cafes), set up a separate wholesale price list with minimum order quantities.

The B2B Wholesale Channel for HoReCa

Many F&B brands start D2C but their real revenue growth comes from wholesale to restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Shopify's native B2B channel (available on Shopify Plus, or via third-party apps on standard plans) lets you:

  • Set separate wholesale pricing (typically 30–50% off retail)
  • Require minimum order quantities per product
  • Offer net payment terms (Net 15, Net 30)
  • Create a separate, password-protected storefront for wholesale buyers

For brands not on Shopify Plus, Wholesale Gorilla ($24.99/month) provides similar functionality.

Putting It All Together

The F&B Shopify store setup sequence we recommend:

  1. Week 1: Theme selection and basic store setup. Install compliance Metafields.
  2. Week 2: Product pages with full nutritional info, certifications, and variant structure.
  3. Week 3: Subscription setup, bundle builder, and cross-sell configuration.
  4. Week 4: Email flows (start with the 7 essential flows), review collection, and loyalty program.

We've set up F&B stores for brands across India and the Middle East. The vertical is complex but extremely rewarding when done right — subscription-driven F&B brands often achieve 35–45% returning customer revenue by month 6.

If you're launching an F&B brand on Shopify or migrating from another platform, book a discovery call. We'll scope your store setup and help you avoid the compliance and UX mistakes we've seen too many brands make.
